Misnomer Dance Theater
Listen to Chris Elam’s welcome message:
Founded in 1998 by choreographer Chris Elam, Misnomer Dance Theater is a six-person modern dance company celebrating the nuances of human communication, including the tenderness, humor, and absurdity that drive our day-to-day interaction. Elam has created an innovative movement language drawn both from extensive improvisation and studio work, and international research and exchange. Finding connections with cultures still rooted in their traditions, rituals, deities and mythologies, Elam has worked extensively with Balinese dance forms, incorporating into his own work an extreme angularity, and ideas about transformation.
Misnomer’s Online Outreach initiative
Misnomer has embarked on several online initiatives leading to:
- Hundreds of emails monthly from new audience members and fans through MySpace, Facebook, Friendster, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other channels.
- A Presenter Partnership program whereby Misnomer works with presenters to build vibrant audiences in the cities where we tour, with hundreds of people signed on in major cities.
- New made-for-video versions of our works, in addition to behind-the-scenes clips, a growing blog, contests, and creative ways to interact with the company.
- New online revenue prospects: using Misnomer as a case-study, we are building a new model for the performing arts, and will work alongside other companies and advocacy groups to help bring the performing arts forward and connect to new and vibrant communities.
- Articles about our online initiatives will be in print in major national magazines soon. Join us on March 8th for our Spring Soiree to learn more!
We are interested in your ideas and are open to partnerships, board involvement, and other means of participating. For more information please contact Chris Elam at chris@misnomer.org or 917-602-0478.
