  • The Young Dance Collective performance

We’ve seen some of the past work by the Young Dance Collective, and thought it would be nice to bring them to your attention in case you don’t know about them already. This group of young choreographers and dancers are remarkably advanced for their age, and they defy expectations. We haven’t seen this program yet, but from what we’ve seen of their past work we thought they stood out in ways that would be worth your consideration.

    Misnomer is Looking for Performers

Misnomer Dance Theater is offering paid rehearsals, performances, and touring for mature men and women dancers with a strong work ethic and desire for an ongoing relationship as a member of the company. In the past, we’ve worked in France, Ukraine, Denmark, and the USA, and we have worked with collaborators ranging from Bjork to the Sundance Channel. Misnomer creates challenging, process-based work, which is highly physical, includes partnering, and calls upon the dancers improvisational, creative and performance skills.

    May 28th, 2pm-3:30pm and 3:30pm – 5pm
    May 29th, 6pm-7:30pm and 7:30pm – 9pm
    May 30th, 1pm-2:30pm and 2:30pm – 4pm

Danish Dance Theater and Elam at Joyce Soho and in Coppenhaggen

Chris Elam has been commissioned to create choreography for the ten dancers of the Danish Dance Theater for their new production entitled “Labyrinth” which premieres in Coppenhaggen in May 2008.

“Labyrinth” is a movable, moving art installation. It is not a traditional dance performance; it is a gigantic art installation created in close collaboration with artists within contemporary dance, music and video art. The piece will be performed on four stages located within a life-sized labyrinth through which the audience will actively walk during the performance.

The Danish Dance Theater is on a residency at the Joyce SoHo for October during which Chris will begin the choreography. You are invited to see the process during two free events: an open rehearsal and a work-in-progress showing, both described below.

    Friday, October 19, 2007, 2:00-4:00 pm
Join us anytime between 2:00-4:00 pm as Chris Elam rehearses members of Danish Dance Theater in a section he is creating for DDT’s artistic director, Tim Rushton’s, larger work.

    Thursday, October 25, 2007, 4:00-6:00 pm
Choreographers Tim Rushton, Chris Elam and members of Danish Dance Theater show their work in progress and take questions from the audience.

In addition, this Friday, Oct 12th, Chris Elam will be hosting After-Hours: a post-performance discussion with the Danish Dance Theater following a performance of their repertory at the Joyce Soho Theater in NYC.

Joyce SoHo, 155 Mercer Street. RSVP Required: (646) 792-8377

    Misnomer’s Work on Google Maps!

Some places in Martha’s Vineyard simply don’t have addresses. Like in Japan, people tend to focus more on landmarks than on actual street addresses. It’s a friendly place and people tend to just walk into your house. Today, we had a dancer walk into our house asking about classes.

If you haven’t yet seen this, we’ve added the location of our next show to our Personal Google Map

Let us know if you’ll be able to make it. Otherwise, check back on the blog for our work in progress!

    Misnomer participates in ThinkTank

There has been lots of change and momentum in the past week. We have been preparing for our show. Outside the theater, however, there is even bigger news…

    fuel4arts logo

On April 2nd, fuel4Arts is hosting a think tank with Misnomer as participants. The think tank will explore different approaches to audience collaboration, focusing in particular on how new web technologies [blogs, etc] can be used to engage customers as partners in the production and/or marketing of art. The main focus will be on methods which allow artists to bypass traditional gatekeepers and connect directly with audiences/participants [that's you].

Methods canvassed will include customised production, blogs, customer reviews, wikis, social networking, viral marketing, word of mouth and DIY media. Participants will share their experience of such methods to date and pose their own questions and challenges as to the best way forward. Jerry Yoshitomi will act as a mentor for the think tank participants (thank you Jerry!).

    Dates

The think tank will run from Monday 2 – Friday 13 April 2007.
